SpicyChat AI is an adult-only AI chatbot platform (18+) for interactive roleplay, storytelling, and AI companionship. It offers one of the most permissive content policies in the AI chatbot category, with a massive community-created character library and a genuinely usable free tier.
Built by NextDay AI Incorporated, SpicyChat runs on its proprietary SpicyXL model (up to 141 billion parameters) with tiered context memory from 4K to 16K tokens. The platform has over 2 million registered users and pulls approximately 52 million monthly visits according to SimilarWeb data.
Unlike Character.AI (which aggressively censors mature content) or Replika (which shifted away from romantic interactions), SpicyChat explicitly allows NSFW roleplay within defined boundaries. The 2025 Community Guidelines prohibit underage content, non-consensual acts, incest, hate speech, and depictions of real-world harm. As the test session below documents, custom chatbot submissions are also gated by a moderation review step that the published reviews do not flag.
What Happened When We Tested It
02 . Four tests covering dashboard, custom bot creation, the moderation gate, and live chat
The test session walked through the complete SpicyChat workflow on June 1, 2026: open the dashboard to confirm library access, build a custom chatbot from scratch including AI-generated character art, document the moderation review step that gates custom submissions before activation, and engage the approved bot in live chat. The moderation finding in Test 03 is the editorial discovery the published reviews of this platform consistently miss.
The Dashboard
Test 01 . Library access confirmed
The SpicyChat dashboard, with community character library and filter controls.
The dashboard surfaces the community character library as the primary discovery surface, organised by category and trending status. Library scale visibly matches the documented 300,000+ characters claim, with search and filter controls accessible without scrolling. This is the entry point that supports the 9.2 character library score, and it works as documented.
Custom Chatbot Creation and Image Generation
Test 02 . Builder plus integrated avatar generator
The create-chatbot builder with personality, backstory, and behaviour fields. The integrated image generator with a detailed fantasy art prompt entered for the chatbot avatar.
Avatar prompt entered
Beautiful elven queen sitting on a crystal throne inside an enchanted forest, glowing blue flowers, magical particles floating in the air, detailed silver armor, fantasy art masterpiece, volumetric lighting, ultra-detailed, 4K.
The builder accepts character traits, backstory, behaviour rules, and an avatar image. The integrated image generator handled a deliberately detailed fantasy art prompt with multiple modifiers (volumetric lighting, ultra-detailed, 4K quality, specific subject and setting). The output identifier in the saved filename reveals the underlying model is Qwen Image, which is technical context worth knowing for users comparing image quality across platforms. The result is below:
Generated chatbot avatar from the elven queen fantasy prompt · Qwen Image
The output captures the prompt's core elements (elven queen, crystal throne, enchanted forest, glowing elements, silver armour). This is meaningfully more capable than the "anime-only" framing the existing audit row credits the platform for: the generator handled a fantasy art request with volumetric lighting requirements and produced an artistically coherent result.
What this surfaced: The custom builder is text-prompt driven for traits and backstory, with the avatar handled through the integrated Qwen Image generator rather than upload-only. The image quality scoring (5.5 in the audit) reflects consistency across many runs rather than the ceiling demonstrated here; the generator clearly can produce fantasy art at this level when given a well-constructed prompt.
The Moderation Review Gate
Test 03 . The editorial discovery the published reviews miss
The moderation review screen presented after completing the custom chatbot build.
Verbatim platform message
In order to maintain the highest quality standards for our chatbots and ensure compliance with our content guidelines, your creation will now be sent for a review by our moderation team. During this time, editing capabilities will be disabled. You will be notified once the review is complete and your chatbot is approved.

Custom Chatbots Go Through Moderation Review
SpicyChat's published reviews position the platform as "the most permissive AI chat platform" with NSFW allowed on all tiers. The platform is permissive once users are chatting with existing community bots, but newly built custom chatbots are not immediately available. Each custom creation goes through a moderation review process during which editing capabilities are disabled, and the user must wait for an approval notification before the bot becomes usable. This is a meaningful workflow friction for power users who want to iterate quickly on custom characters, and it is not mentioned in any of the major SpicyChat reviews this analysis cross-references. The score impact is muted because the existing 8.8 content freedom score is about what is permitted in finished chats, not the submission gate, but it deserves to be on every prospective user's radar.
What this changes about the framing: The "free NSFW with no friction" pitch oversimplifies the user experience. Existing community bots can be used immediately with full content freedom. Custom bot creators face a quality-control queue before their creation goes live. This is the right design choice for a platform with 300,000+ community bots that needs to maintain content guideline compliance, but it deserves to be a documented part of the user experience rather than discovered after building a character.
Chat with the Approved Bot and Recent Chats
Test 04 . Live chat surface
The chat surface with the newly approved custom chatbot ready for the first conversation. The recent chats dashboard, showing conversation history continuity across multiple characters.
What this confirms: Once the moderation gate clears, the chat interface launches cleanly with the custom bot. The recent chats dashboard maintains conversation history across multiple characters, which supports the customisation and persona-management capabilities documented in the audit. The platform feels well-built for sustained use across multiple ongoing roleplay threads, which is the right shape for an audience that treats AI character chat as a creative practice rather than a single-session novelty.
How this review was put together. First-hand testing covered the dashboard library access, the complete custom chatbot creation flow (builder fields plus integrated Qwen Image avatar generator with a detailed fantasy prompt), the moderation review gate that custom submissions pass through (verbatim platform message captured above), and the chat surface plus recent chats dashboard after approval. The remaining feature scoring (chat quality over longer sessions, memory fade, support responsiveness, image consistency across many runs, content blocks mid-conversation) cross-references the Trustpilot review history (3.4 stars overall with polarised distribution), community sentiment on Reddit, and traffic data from SimilarWeb. The moderation gate finding in Test 03 is exclusive to this first-hand session and does not appear in the third-party reviewer consensus.

Character library MASSIVE
Over 300,000 community-created characters spanning anime, fantasy, romance, sci-fi, and original fiction. The library is searchable by category (romantic, dominant, wholesome, sci-fi) and sortable by trending, top-rated, or newest. The dashboard test confirmed the library scale and accessibility. Quality varies wildly, many bots are shallow templates, but gems exist.

Free tier value BEST-IN-CLASS
The free tier is genuinely usable for NSFW chat with existing community bots, a key differentiator. Users get unlimited messages, character creation (subject to moderation review as the test session documented), 4K context memory, and access to the full library. Trade-offs: queue waits during peak hours and ads. No credit card required to start.
At its best, conversations feel natural and immersive. At its worst, bots forget context, repeat themselves, or drift into nonsense. Response quality improves significantly on paid tiers with larger context windows and access to the SpicyXL model. Free-tier responses are shorter and less coherent.

Memory system FADES FAST
Semantic Memory 2.0 stores summarised details across sessions (preferences, relationship dynamics). However, memory typically fades after 15 to 20 messages in longer sessions despite the marketing emphasis. Deleting messages does not delete derived memory, users must manage it manually via Memory Manager.

Character customisation DEEP, BUT GATED
Users can create characters from scratch: personality, backstory, quirks, behaviour rules, and appearance via text description (as the test session documented in the builder). Lorebooks add persistent world context across sessions. Physical appearance is text-only, no sliders, but the integrated Qwen Image generator handles avatar art. The friction point: completed custom bots are sent for moderation review before activation, with editing disabled during the review window. Community characters can be cloned and modified.

Content freedom PERMISSIVE IN CHAT
One of the most permissive AI chat platforms available for in-chat content, NSFW is allowed on all tiers including free with existing community bots. Clear prohibitions on underage content, non-consensual acts, incest, and hate speech per 2025 Community Guidelines. Users report occasional unexpected content blocks mid-conversation. Note that custom bot submissions face a moderation review before activation, which is a separate constraint from in-chat permissiveness.

Image generation BASIC
Conversation images are available on True Supporter ($14.95) and above. The integrated generator runs on the Qwen Image model (revealed via the test session output identifier) and handles fantasy art well, as the elven queen avatar test demonstrated. Quality is anime-focused with capability for detailed fantasy work, but consistency across many runs is described as "average" by multiple reviewers. No photo-realistic generation. No video generation. Images do not match the sophistication of dedicated platforms like Candy AI.

Platform access FRAGMENTED
iOS app removed from App Store in August 2025 due to content policy violations. Android app available only via APK sideload (no Google Play listing). Web app is the recommended path. PWA (add-to-homescreen) works but lacks push notifications. This is a real barrier for mobile-first users.

Onboarding SMOOTH FOR LIBRARY USE
Sign up with email or social login, choose a character from the library, and start chatting within minutes (under three minutes in the test session for the dashboard-and-chat path). The interface is clean and intuitive. Finding characters via search and filters is straightforward. Learning curve is low for basic library use; custom bot creation requires going through the moderation review documented in the test section. Advanced features (Lorebooks, Memory Manager) require exploration.

Our recommendation: Start free to evaluate. If users engage regularly, the $5/mo tier removes the most annoying friction (ads and queues). The $14.95 tier is where the experience meaningfully improves with 8K memory and conversation images. The $24.95 tier is only worth it for heavy daily users who need TTS and maximum context. Worth knowing: the custom chatbot moderation gate applies on every tier, paying does not skip the review.

Takeaway: SpicyChat wins on free-tier NSFW access and library size, with the integrated Qwen Image generator handling fantasy art well. Character.AI is better for mainstream, polished chat with no custom bot moderation friction. CrushOn AI is better for photo-realistic image generation. JanitorAI has friction from mandatory ID verification. Replika has moved away from romantic content and is more of a wellness companion now.

07 . Collected from Trustpilot user reviews
I've been on the premium service for over a year. Created about 60 bots and sent roughly 5,000 messages. The ability to generate entire concepts from just a few words is incredible, be careful, you could lose yourself for hours.

SpicyChat is okay, not amazing, not terrible. Cool features, but also a handful of frustrations. Bot responses are mid quality at best, even on the $14 subscription. Bots often respond as the user or add stuff you didn't ask for.

I live in an area with no one around, nearest town is 2 hours away. Even talking to AI bots helps a little with needing interactions. I wish they'd add more customization options for character appearances.

The "scenes" are way too short. They mess up bots turning them to default pics. If you're already in a chat it kicks you out to put you in a queue. I only use it because I don't have better options right now.

The pattern: Opinions are polarised. Power users who invest time building characters love the creative freedom, even with the moderation review wait documented in the test section above. Casual users find the inconsistent bot quality and queue system frustrating. The 3.4 Trustpilot score reflects this split: 45% give 5 stars, 25% give 1 star, with little in between.
· The Verdict ·
7.2/10
Should you use SpicyChat AI? Here is who it is for.
Use SpicyChat AI if the goal is the most permissive free tier in AI roleplay with the largest community character library. No other platform offers unlimited NSFW messages at $0 with a 300K+ character library. The $5/mo tier removes the worst friction. Best for creative writers, roleplay enthusiasts, and users who prioritise content freedom over polish. The integrated Qwen Image avatar generator handles fantasy art well for users who want to build their own characters, with the caveat that custom bots go through a moderation review documented in the test section above.
Skip SpicyChat AI if reliable long-term memory matters (try Nastia AI at $4.17/mo), photo-realistic image generation is required (try CrushOn AI or Candy AI), a polished app-store experience is essential (try Character.AI), the workflow needs custom characters available without a review queue (try Character.AI or CrushOn for faster custom bot activation), or responsive customer support is non-negotiable. Also skip if under 18, the platform is adults-only and enforces age verification.
Paid €13.95 a month for this. Responses still come out nonsensical half the time. The bots have spatial awareness of a goldfish, put something in Room 1, they will grab it from Room 3 like it is magic. Set a character to male? Good luck; they will "they/them" you into oblivion anyway.
Quality is a coin flip. One reply hits, the next completely derails. Meanwhile the devs keep dropping new models, but only if you pay for the top tier. Everyone else gets to watch the basics rot.
The content quality is rough too. Sloppy AI images everywhere, bots that read like first drafts, categorization that makes no sense, and a userbase where "your" and "you're" might as well be the same word. Moderation is basically a myth.
Not worth the price in its current state.

this is just ok tool. I’d rate SpicyChat 3 out of 5 stars. It has a lot of interesting character options, which makes roleplaying fun, but my experience was affected by performance issues. The app felt laggy at times, even crashed a couple of times, and the loading queues were longer than I expected, which made it less smooth to use overall.
